News, Notes,
Upcoming Events, Etc
ESPN has a news show called E:60, where they cover a variety of sports-related topics and have round-table like discussions. The current show, aired Mon/Tues (and probably will be re-aired until next week on any of the several ESPN channels) covered girls lacrosse and concussions, and possible need for helmets. etc. This webmaster saw the piece and it was interesting.
U.S. Lacrosse has issued a response to that on its website (click here to see the response). It talks about what USL has done and is doing for safety in the game, etc, and that helmets would not really cut down on the number of concussions anyway; USL feels that a better approach is to continue to provide comprehensive lax-specific education and training-certification programs for coaches and officials, as well as to continue reviewing and revising rules and equipment to keep the game safe and fun for all.
As part of its response, it lists what rule change suggestions came out of the US Lacrosse Rules Committee mtg on August 7th, to be put to vote in September to go into effect for the coming season. All of them aim to "overhaul and increase the severity of penalties given to players and teams who play recklessly and without regard for the rules and player safety." Please note that these have NOT BEEN VOTED ON YET, these are just the rule change suggestions that came out of the rules meeting. Nothing has been passed or changed yet!

In a single game, for the girl who receives two yellow cards for any major foul, including checks to the head, she will be removed from the game and will not be allowed to play in the following game.
-
In a single game under the full-checking rules, for the girl who receives a red card for a flagrant foul, including a check to the head, she will be removed from the game and will not be allowed to play for the next 2 games.
-
In a single game, for the team who accumulates 3 cards for any reason, the team will have to play player-down for the remainder of the game –and will continue to lose players for each subsequent card received.
-
Additionally, coach cards are included in the card count that could lead to playing player-down, requiring coaches to be more accountable for the play of their athlete.
These are not game-play rules changes, these are just rules that increase the aftermath of penalties of what already occurs in games (so, its not like when hard boundaries or offsides lines were introduced; those affected the actual playing of the game). Should these be enacted, they will help clean the game up for those that play rough/dirty, and they should also help encourage more good sportsmanship and fair play and more fun for all partcipants.
Weekly informal summer pickup games for 8th through post collegiate level are currently being held on Thursdays evenings from 6:45 pm til dark at Westchester.
